Max Patch
Today we left the house at 3:30 (AM!) and drove two hours in the rain to get to a place I'd never been before: Max Patch. It's a plateau in Asheville, North Carolina and it's part of the Appalachian Trail. I've lived in Tennessee my whole life and have many a time gone to the mountains and to visit colonial homes. It's something that feels very integral to who I am. Hiking up that mountain, we were huffing and puffing the whole way. The sun beat us to the top, but the view with the bright green trees and sparkling clouds was a good trade-off. If you haven't been, I suggest taking a few hours out of a Saturday and making the trip.
