Prep Work

I’d say three-fourths of what I do as a photographer doesn’t happen on shoot day. There’s so much that goes into a successful session. I’m a huge researcher, planner, note taker and this part of the process is just as important as what happens on the day of the shoot, and very possibly, more so.

When I get an inquiry I try to get as much basic info as possible to make sure we’re on a good track to get the ball rolling. I always suggest either meeting up in person or having a phone conversation to go over all the details of what my client’s goals are for the shoot, what their style is, and get to know them as a person so we’re able to tap into that rapport on the day of. Going over details about location is really vital at this point so we can think through all the possibilities we’re working with. There will be variables outside of my control on shoot day so in preparation, my goal is to be well aware of my surroundings and the location so that I’m prepared to shift my plan at a moment’s notice should the need arise. It definitely takes a combination of preparedness and fast thinking.

Pinterest is a huge asset and I always get a board started between me and my client so we can collaborate with visual ideas to inspire us. And I use this on shoot day as a jumping off point for aesthetic and composition. Keeping images that inspire me around as I plan is a great way to keep me on target and allow for new ideas that we haven’t thought of.

All of this goes into me getting you the images you need to create a brand identity, promote your business, or capture a special moment in time in your life. I love the WHOLE process. I love the open heartedness and generosity that I’m able to let flow from me to the people I work with.
